CDG worked on a design-build team with over 10 design and construction firms to upgrade MSD Project Clear’s current biosolids stabilization systems. Upgrades included new dewatering and fluidized bed incineration (FBI) systems at two of their wastewater treatment facilities- Bissell Point and Lemay. This was one of the largest design-build projects in the Midwest at a cost of just under $1 billion.
The new FBI systems will include incinerator reactors, heat exchangers, blowers, emission control equipment, ash handling equipment, ductwork, controls, and associated items. New sludge dewatering processes will also be provided. All new equipment and related systems associated with the new incineration and dewatering processes will be in new Solids Processing Buildings (SPBs) cosntructed at both facilities.
CDG served as the structural engineer of record for the foundations and anchorage of these buildings, and the electrical engineer of record for the medium voltage designs. At Bissell Point, CDG designed new foundations comprised of driven H-piles. At Lemay, the building was founded on reinforced concrete drilled shafts supporting columns and heavy equipment loads. Design challenges included 26′ deep basement with a high-water table, rock voids, and Seismic Design Category (SDC) D design requirements.
Structural design was also provided for multiple ancillary structures and new maintenance access tunnels. Additional electrical engineering scope included renovated maintenance building and receiving building. Construction is currently underway and is expected to be completed by 2028.
